The Curriculum

Pre-Primary

At the Pre-Primary level, children work to develop themselves in the setting of the prepared environment. Five areas of activity assist this process.     

Practical life exercises encourage independence through learning to care for oneself, others and the environment. It establishes the work cycle - a work is chosen, completed and returned to its location, ready for another person to use.     

The Sensorial Apparatus awakens the mind to the stimuli that are received through the senses; these are then named.     

The Language programme begins by making the child aware of the sounds of speech and then associates symbols with them. Through a variety of approaches, writing and reading ensure the beginning of grammar. Their work is always  introduced in a meaningful way.     

Number work focuses on the decimal system and its operations. The foundations of geometry and algebra are also laid.     

The culture area includes elements of.     

  • Geography - the nature of the earth and its people. 
  • Biology - the classification of plants and animals. 
  • History - a sense of the progression of time and of current events. 
  • Art & Music - experiences of these and an introduction to their styles.
Primary

All the cultural areas are interrelated and taught together. This is described as "Cosmic Education" Is divided into two stages: 6-9 years and 9-12 years

History gives an overview from the beginning of life through to the study of the child's own country. This includes natural evolution, prehistoric man and research into early civilizations. The preparation and potential for human kind are emphasized.

Geography looks into the structure of the earth, its relation to the sun, zones of vegetation, the work of wind and water, and the nature of elements. Economic and political geography are also covered.

Biology reveals the diversity of forms and functions in botany and zoology, it culminates in their classification. An ecological viewpoint results from these studies.

Language, the history of speech and writing, grammar, syntax and composition are studied. Foreign language lessons are also offered.

Maths includes operations, powers of numbers, the decimal system, other bases, negative numbers, fractions and algebra.

Geometry investigates 2 and 3 dimensional shapes and the calculation of areas and volume.

Art and Music their techniques and range are further explored. Recorder lessons are also given

Physical Education bat and ball skills, co-operative games, fitness and team games such as gymnastics, T-Ball, cricket and basketball, and from time to time other forms of physical activity as appropriate. The children are also involved in a fitness programme three mornings a week.

Computers give the opportunity to become aware of the capabilities, limitations and relevance of computers and to become computer literate at a functional level.

Spirituality religious education is not given in a formal sense. However, the children are encouraged to develop their own spirituality and to feel part of the purpose of the cosmos with a responsibility towards co-operation and peace. As we live in a Christian society, these festivals are primarily observed. However, the children are also exposed to the beliefs and festivals of a variety of other religions.
