Upper Primary
The period of 9-12 years of age is the end of the second plane of
development and is the preparation for a new identity. The challenges
are ever-increasing. Children will review their old work through
re-interpretation (eg Maths facts are reviewed through factorisation,
divisibility, powers, etc). There is less time for verbalisation and
free talk. Deadlines are given and external correction of error is
required.
A child at this stage of development is very aware of their strengths and
areas of growth. They will be required to work on these areas to
prepare themselves for high school.
Beehive currently has two upper primary classrooms, led by Anthea and
Bronwyn.
La Casa del Mare
Surfing: Every Friday this term upper primary went surfing at our
local beach. We have made a lot of progress this term in our skills. We have
been taught by Surfing WA. We enjoyed surfing a lot.
Camp:
It took us 6 hours to get to Albany. We went to the Sandalwood factory and
watched a slide show there on the manufacturing of sandalwood oil. We also
got free samples of soap.
The
first evening was ‘Red Faces’. Daniel and Beau’s Grease Lightening act was
the highlight of the night.
Day 2 -
We went to Whale World and saw how they used to get oils and blubber out of
the whales and cook them. This was very interesting however very gross!
That evening was our disco.
Day 3 -
It was Sam’s 9th birthday and we tried to make it a really good day for her.
We visited Mt Clarence where we admired the view. We then moved on to the
wind farm and looked again at the beauty of the scenery. That evening we
watched a movie called ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ (supplied to us by Mack!)
Day 4 -
We visited an animal farm where we held ferrets and lambs. Pork Chop (a baby
pig) was the highlight of the farm! We then went on a tour through the
‘Valley of the Giants’ and saw the ‘Grandma Tingle’ tree. This evening we
saw the other half of the DVD and we packed our bags ready for the drive
home.
Day 5 –
It is our last day and we had to have breakfast at 7.30am so that we could
get straight on the bus for the home journey. We arrived back to school a
bit earlier than planned which was great (by 1 minute!).
Coastal Project (Year 6 & 7’s): This term we did a Coastal
Project. We went out and went to the beach and we picked up rubbish and it
was fun. We had a lot of guest speakers come and talk to us about lots of
different plants and their habitats and what the rocks where made up of.
Museum Excursion: The year 4 - 5’s went on an excursion and there
were lots of rocks and meteorites in the museum. Anthea took us and then we
all made a questionnaire. Then Sam (the Notre Dame student) typed it up for
us and we went back the next week. That next week, we completed the
questionnaire and that was the end of that!
